2005 America’s Byways™ Designation Event
On September 22, 2005, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta announced the designation of forty-five new America’s Byways™, which include both All-American Roads and National Scenic Byways. The Designation Event, held at Union Station in Washington, D.C., featured remarks from several members of Congress, as well as officials from the U.S. DOT and the Federal Highway Administration. Representatives from Scenic Virginia, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Colonial Parkway, George Washington Memorial Parkway, Skyline Drive, VDOT, and the Blue Ridge Parkway Association were on hand to participate in the event.
The successful designation of Virginia’s four federal Parkways represented the culmination of three years of hard work by a public-private coalition composed of representatives from Scenic Virginia, the National Park Service, the Federal Highway Administration, the four Parkways, VDOT, Virginia Tourism Corporation, the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, the Blue Ridge Parkway Association, and numerous local marketing groups and attractions (e.g. Luray Caverns and Colonial Williamsburg).
