Please read the following rules, terms and conditions before submitting any photos. DEFINITON OF A VIEWSHED: The natural environment that is visible from one or more viewing points. www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/viewshed WHAT TO ENTER: We are looking for beautiful digital images of Virginia’s scenic viewsheds. Your images can be taken anywhere in Virginia. The categories are as follows: Farms and Open Space Peaks and Valleys/Mountains Coastal/Chesapeake Bay Rivers and Waterways Cities and Towns/Urban Landscapes Viewsheds featuring Wildlife Two special categories have been added in 2011 to celebrate the following milestones: 75th Anniversary of Shenandoah National Park 75th Anniversary of Virginia State Parks. Also new in 2011, Scenic Virginia is including a Youth category. Photographers under 18 years of age can submit a maximum of five photos in any of the above categories. HOW TO ENTER: Email each photo (one photo per email, with a maximum of five per photographer -- see note below) to: ScenicVirginiaPhotoCompetition@gmail.com, as follows: 1) In the subject line of your email, state the category and the photo name, e.g., Peaks and Valleys/Mountains -- Blue Ridge Parkway at Mabry Mill; Youth -Urban Landscapes  -- Charlottesville Foggy Morning, etc. This is how your photo will be identified by the judges. 2) In the body of the email, provide additional descriptive location information not included in the subject line that will help us catalog the photo, e.g., Belle Isle State Park in Lancaster County; the James River in Richmond; King Street in Old Town Alexandria, etc. 3) Please include your full contact information, including the photographer’s name, mailing address, phone number, preferred email address and local newspapers. NOTE: Photographers are limited to a maximum of five entries, which can be divided as you set fit among the various categories. Photographers will receive an email confirming receipt of each photograph. As quickly as possible, Scenic Virginia will upload the photos to our Picasa Web Album (picasaweb.google.com/scenicvirginia). DEADLINE: Deadline for submitting entries is April 1, 2011 at 5:00 pm EST. Winners will be notified by May 1, 2011. Scenic Virginia reserves the right to adjust any deadline(s) as the result of causes beyond its immediate control. ELIGIBILITY AND JUDGING: Entries may originate in any format -- including, but not limited to digital files, digital prints, color transparencies, color prints, or black and white prints -- but must be submitted electronically. The photos should be at least 5 mega pixels (we need clear images to reproduce). Previously published material for which non-exclusive rights were granted can be entered as long as you still maintain the right to grant us a license (see "Your Rights" below). You must be able to disclose when and where the photo appeared previously to Scenic Virginia upon request. The criteria for judging are as follows. Images will be judged on originality, technical excellence, composition, overall impact and artistic merit.  The judges will also follow these guidelines: The images are view and vistas in Virginia, which are clearly identified. They represent a viewshed -- they are neither a close-up nor an interior; the scene depicts more than the immediate surroundings. Consideration should be given to compatibility. All scenes will be presented together both in note cards and in public displays. No two images chosen should be very similar. This is a contest for the most beautiful natural beauty or well-planned urban landscape. Beautiful scenes in Virginia should take precedence over interesting photographs. The panel of judges will be selected by Scenic Virginia’s Board of Trustees. Scenic Virginia shall determine winner eligibility in its sole and absolute discretion. All decisions made by the judges are final. The photo competition is not open to the Board members and staff of Scenic Virginia. WINNING PHOTOS: A panel of judges will select a winner in each of the categories. Each winner will receive: Two tickets and recognition at the 2011 Scenic Awards ceremony.   Mention in our “Yes, Virginia!” newsletter. Prominent placement on our website. Two sets of Scenic Virginia’s 2011 note cards -- a $20.00 value -- that feature the winning photographs. YOUR RIGHTS: You will retain all rights to any photograph you submit -- including ownership, if applicable -- other than those rights licensed in the next sentence. By entering the Viewshed Photo Competition, you hereby grant to Scenic Virginia (i) a nonexclusive, irrevocable, royalty-free license to reproduce, distribute, and publicly display the photographs you submit to Scenic Virginia, and (ii) the right to use your name, city, state and country of residence in promotions and other publications. All photographs will be credited with the caption "Photo Name by Photographer Name -- Courtesy of Scenic Virginia." Scenic Virginia has final approval of any language that appears on its website with any of the photos and will not promote or endorse third-party products or services.
