1998 – 2008: A Decade of Dedication – and Rewards
A Look Back
Scenic Virginia celebrates its Tenth Anniversary in 2008. With an enlightened founder and supporters like you, just look at what we’ve done:
- Developed an annual Scenic Awards program to recognize excellence in the field of scenic conservation, particularly with projects that can be replicated elsewhere.
- Brought the National Scenic Byways program to Virginia by serving as the multi-agency coordinator in this statewide effort.
- Sponsored successful legislation leading to the formation of new VDOT policy for the trimming of trees along our roadsides.
- Served as the sole statewide watchdog for Virginia’s scenic resources, both locally and in the General Assembly.
- Built a strong scenic constituency to hold elected officials accountable.
- Promoted the value of preserving significant viewsheds and scenic vistas, and are developing a new signature project: A statewide register of significant viewsheds.
We’re proud to be the go-to group for citizens and other conservation organizations through our enviable network of government, business, citizen, and non-profits contacts.
Tenth Anniversary Events
For the next 12 months, we'll be celebrating our ten-year anniversary with fun events designed to highlight our accomplishments, rejoice in our successes, and continue our momentum into the next decade. There’ll be happenings around the state — outings, social gatherings, and a photography contest. Read below, and make your choice.
Get Out There!
Scenic Virginia works every day to preserve scenic views. These three-dimensional, living, breathing viewsheds are beautiful to look at and ready to be explored.
Over the next year Scenic Virginia will be partnering with like-minded organizations and individuals in hosting outings — canoe rides on the Susquehanna, hikes on private mountain trails, bike rides on the back roads of the Shenandoah Valley -- to honor our Big Ten. We’ll be waiting for you!
Party On!
Friends of Scenic Virginia will be gathering across the state for lunch, brunch, cocktails, dinner — even high tea — to celebrate and spread the word about our work.
We are planning ten events throughout the year and across the Commonwealth to share news of our goals and accomplishments. Friends in the Northern Neck, Richmond, Roanoke, Stafford County, and the Eastern Shore have already volunteered to host an event. Five down, five to go. Are you interested? Just let us know where you live and what type of event you'd like to host. We'll happily join your gathering to talk about our work.
